We were awakened this morning by a murder of crows in the trees of our forest. Thus the Old Crow gets first billing.
Overall about 14 inches tall. Old Crow is a little over an inch.

Red Bird Sighting
A scarlet flash across the dazzling white snow;

The cardinal, dressed in his royal red robe, appears.
In the pale sun, he flaunts rubicund feathers
As he monitors his competition at the feeder,
Politely waiting his turn, but alert for danger.
Scratching deeply, Chickadees, juncos, and doves
Graze the ground for scattered snow-buried seeds.
Sparrows and peckers above vie for frozen morsels.
At seven degrees, the hungry menagerie gathers
Unafraid to settle with the cats holed up indoors.
When Wisconsin falls into the deep, dark of winter,
We long for a bright spot in the pale landscape.
Red-bird hope writ large on the gray canvas of the north.

Across the street live two beautiful blue-eyed huskies who howl with their human friends. At our house, we listen and growl just a bit, afraid to draw the attention of this primal force.
